The Lyceum II. Interlude; "Challenge your fear, and banish it"
by Rhay Garrett
Learning how to live in the moment will be your greatest asset if you allow it. Even the bravest man you know has a sense of fear, the difference is that when it becomes time to prove himself he overcomes his adversities and rises to the occasion. There is no book you can read, or person that you can listen to that can distill your fear. Making gains mentally is much like working out any other muscle, you can do instinctive research before hand (which is necessary) but if you don't get your ass in the gym then you won't have any progress. You may gain self-esteem by being told that you have potential, but it becomes redundant if its not put to use. If you're not constantly applying yourself then you will become rusty; and at the first sign of trouble you will devolve back into being insecure. Being successful is much like waging war. You're not just waging war on your enemies, you are more importantly waging war on yourself. Familiarity is the death of momentum. Once you get too antiquated, you prevent yourself from seeing thing more objectively. Any fear that you have in your heart, you must banish it from your soul. Fear leads to something even more self-destructive "hesitation". Hesitation is your greatest enemy, and comes from how we as humans evolved. Our ancestors two hundred thousand years ago were fragile creatures who had to adapt quickly or be eliminated from the gene pool. We were short primitive animals back then (four feet tall average) who weren't great runners due to our short stubby legs. Since we couldn't outrun our predators and more importantly run and catch our prey; we had to develop other tactics such as the development of tools and spears to make hunting easier and more efficient. We learned to elevate ourselves above the playing field and not just think as a hunter, but as prey. By thinking how prey and enemies would react, we were able to plan and coordinate our attacks. In a few thousand years our brain size more than doubled, and we weren't considered fragile docile creatures...But the ultimate killing machine.
One thing that never served us any use, was hesitation. Hesitation could mean that prey could have a split second to dodge our trap, or miss our spear. Hesitation could also mean life and death, if we didn't rely on our instincts then our enemies (other animals) would catch us and kill us. We avoided this encounter by thinking logically, but we survived these encounters by sheer instinct. A direct negative stimulus would result in us running away. If we didn't run, then we would die. Simple. There is no hesitation in life in death. Either you avoid what kills you with logic, or you escape what kills you with emotion. Things haven't changed, even if the technology and equipment has. Our brains haven't caught up with the technological advances in society. We are still primitive by nature, and we are still able to sniff out danger like animals can. Think of goosebumps. Goosebumps serve no purpose anymore, the modern human being has shed all of its fur through natural selection. Yet, we still have a automatic defensive on the surface of our skin that helps us signal that we are in immediate danger. It is a trait that is left over from when we had fur that raised up when we were threatened. That is why when you are cold, or when you are frightened your brain sends out a message to the rest of your body that you are in danger. If you don't react to this signal, it could very well mean life and death. (Not literally but in some cases).
Hesitation has never served us any benefit, except in logical situations. The problem is that emotional situations come more often than logical. Emotional situations call for emotional responses. Hesitation is fear, and fear is a threat to your survival. Have you ever noticed that when you don't hesitate you have a higher chance of success? When approaching women, or shooting a shot in basketball. When you rid yourself of your fear, you allow yourself to tap into your hidden potential as a human being. All your most charismatic qualities are allowed to thrive. Your wit, humor, confidence. Everything that allows you to be in your highest state of mind for success, is unlocked. Fear is the opposite, it will paralyze you. It will prevent you from making decisions that are for your better development as a person. The longer you think about something before you take action, the higher chance of failure. When you want something you must go toward it with all your passion. You must live only for the moment. Forget about all your insecurities, all your problems. Everything. Never hesitate for a moment or you will be finished.
